I have learnt how to create both a shallow and deep depth of field using three points. Aperture, focal length and how far the camera is from its subject.
To create a shallow depth of field, you need a large aperture. This is using apertures such as F2.8 and F4. Moreover, its also beneficial to use long telephoto lenses and focal lenses to focus in blurring out both the front and the back. Finally, by having a short distance from the actually subject helps with creating a shallow depth of field.
Meanwhile, to create a deep depth of field you need the opposite, a small apertures (for example F16 and F22). The best type of lens to use to create a deep depth is a wide angled lens. This makes the focus not just solely on the main subject but some and sometimes all of the background. In terms of focal point, you should be a long distance away from the focal point in order to achieve a deep depth of field.
