An Evaluation of My Skills Building Project.

Over the pasted few months I have been learning skills in photography.

WEEK 1: Composition- The rule of thirds is mentally dividing a photo into thirds with two imaginary lines vertically and two lines horizontally. The  most important composition elements and leading lines are placed on or near the imaginary lines and where the lines intersect. Leading lines draws a viewer into the main focus of a picture and finally, having a frame with in a frame makes a picture look more aesthetically pleasing.

WEEK 2: Photographic Lenses-  A wide angle lens example is a fish eye lens. They distort the picture and as a result makes the contents of the picture wider than it really is. A standard photo represents what we as human beings see and is a good starter lens as it does not distort the image. An example of this type of lens is a 50mm camera lens. Finally, a telephoto lens is used for action shots, and one example of this type of lens is a 105mm Fixed F2 telephoto lens.

WEEK 3: Apertures and Depth of Field- The depth of field ca be controlled by the aperture. The aperture of a camera has ranges from F2.8 to F16 . If you wanted a shallow depth of field then you would want a large aperture (this is F2 or F4.) On the other hand, a deep depth of field would need a smaller aperture such as F16 and F22.

WEEK 4: Light Trails- Light trails can be made by having photos with long exposures that are taken around moving light. They can be made with head and rear lights of cars, and even an iPhone light and a camera set with a long exposure. When trying to take a light trail photo, a lot of time it is trail and error, you cannot tell what the picture is going to look like. The first thing you should do is set your camera to a low light sensitivity setting. Your camera should be in auto meaning you can focus on the main subject in the picture (this can be a person or a sign.) Then, once you have focused this; switch your camera settings from auto to manual.

WEEK 5: Lighting Techniques- Three lighting shots are: Butterfly, Rembrandt and Short. They can be used in both soft and hard lighting. They are most commonly used in interviews but can be photographed using objects too. Butterfly shots have lots of light and is also known as a glamorous shot. A Rembrandt shot has a triangle on the shaded side of the subject being taken. Finally, a short shot, like the Rembrandt has a shadow below the nose, below the lower lip and then underneath the neck.

In my personal opinion, I think that my strongest week in terms of skills building is with the depth of field. This is because I was unaware of how to use the aperture in order to take two complete different photos. I think I learnt the most from this activity and so therefore would deem this my strongest.  Because I learnt the most during this stage, I would also say that this was the workshop that impacted and affected my work the most, as in the week after, i started to use the aperture and depth of field a lot more when taking photos.

I think that by learning all of these skills it will further improve my photography skills and in hinds sight also help improve my media skills. This is because I will be more aware of the surrounding around me and as a result will be able to gain more shots that looks more aesthetically pleasing to the viewers eye.
